Dear friends,

We had a very successful 2008 CASB New Year Party on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in Evergreen Restaurant, New York city.

Our honorable guests include Ambassador and Mrs. Peng Keyu, the Chinese Consul General in New York, and Nobel Laureate in Economics, Prof. Robert Mundell. The distinguished guests also include Ambassador Xu Yanan, Ambassador Li Jianying, Science-Technology Counselor Mao Zhongying, Education Counselor Ai Fanglin, famous Professors, Artists, and Chairman, President and partners of many important invest banking companies, banks, public companies and hi-tech companies.

Dr. Daxi Li, Chairman of CASB, welcomed guests, and reported the major activities of CASB in 2007.

In 2007 CASB organized several delegations to visit China including CASB delegation to 10th Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology, one of the most important OCS conventions in China. CASB was the only overseas co-sponsor of the First Guangzhou Convention of Overseas Chinese Scholars in Science and Technology in 1998. We are very happy to see the great achievements of this important convention, which we helped to started 10 years ago.

One of the important news of CASB in 2007 is the Grand Opening of the Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Scholar Venture Park Building in July, 2007. The Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Scholar Venture Park (“Shenzhen OCSVP”) is a joint venture of CASB with Shenzhen city government, established in 2001, and managed by experts from CASB. It holds 250 OCS high-tech startup companies now. The Shenzhen OCSVP Building is a 23 floor modern building with 50,000 square meters of office space. It took 4 years to complete construction. It becomes the headquarter of our Shenzhen OCSVP, and is holding over 100 OCS high-tech startup companies now.

Ambassador Peng Keyu presented an enthusiastic speech. It is the first time he participated in a New York Science and Technology organization meeting since he became the New York Consol General in last December. He wishes every one a Happy New Year.

Prof. Mundell gave a very impressive speech about the current world finance situation, the Chinese economy and Chinese foreign currency reserve and Renmingbi exchange rate policies. Prof. Mundell just returned from his China trip. He was very impressed by China’s great efforts to overcome the snow and ice disaster, and is very confident about China’ continuous growth.

Prof. Mundell also sang a song “My Way”, which he sang when he gave his Nobel Prize reception speech in 1999. Miss Jiang Fong Tao, a famous Soprano, also sang her favor songs for us.

The Vice President of CASB, Dr. Zeqi Zhou and Dr. Bin Li also talked about their plan in China. Both of them are the Vice President of CASB, both are going to fulfill their dreams of returning to China and serving the motherland in next couple months. Dr. Zeqi Zhou is going to be the Vice President of the Tianjin International Joint Academy for Biotechnology and Medicine, which is a project with a 10 billion RMB budget. Dr. Bin Li will work in the investment field.

During the reception, Prof. Renqiu Yu of SUNY, who is a charter member of CASB, also had a book signing event for his new book <<请客>> (“QingKe” Dinner Parties). “QingKe” is a great book to read. I am glad to see that Prof. Yu’s fans are not just artists, professors, but also workers including the restaurant waiters.

After the dinner many friends also enjoyed the Karaoke and sang songs together with distinguished artists and Prof. Mundell.

China Press reported our event in local news section on 2/15. The link is http://65.19.141.170:81/qiaobao/html/2008-02/15/content_4488.htm
